What the Scholarship means to me
Being selected as the recipient of the Scholarship Foundation of the Pacific scholarship means the world to me. I was speechless when I received the phone call as I saw my future flash before my eyes. I consider myself ever so lucky to be brought up on the pristine archipelago of Haida Gwaii where where so many wonderful opportunities including this scholarship have been presented to me. I had been aware of the foundation and working towards this scholarship since my days in elementary school. Now I am proud and honoured to be able to say I represent the Scholarship Foundation of the Pacific.
I will be attending SFU this fall and for the next four years, working towards a joint major in chemistry and biochemistry. My plan is to pursue a career in biochemistry or environmental chemistry on Haida Gwaii to help give back to the islands that have given me so much. Working towards this scholarship has taught me that if you want something great, you have to strive for it and it's a lesson I shall take with me to university. Thanks to the foundation, I should be able to achieve my goals with little financial resistance and for this, I wish to express my utmost gratitude
I would like to give thanks to the volunteer driven committee for your generosity to me and past recipients from my community. I would also like to thank the participants of the foundations fundraisers as well as the donors who help raise the funds for the educational benefit of small coastal community like my own.
Sincerely,
Taro Oike
